Toyota Develops New Toyota Prius Prime Plug-In

Toyota automakers have a lot on their plate when it comes to future technologies and features. Some of these developments seem to be right around the corner. Others seem so far out of this world that the possibility of certain feats seems to come from the realm of science fiction. Features like self-driving cars and artificial intelligence are still foreign. At Serra Toyota of Decatur, we like to focus on the present and what we can currently offer our beloved Decatur, AL Toyota drivers. From new 2016 Toyota models like the fresh and exhilarating 2016 Toyota RAV4 to parts and service on both new and pre-owned Toyota models, we’ve got you covered.

While we’ll let the automaker worry about bringing the future to us, it’s still interesting to keep up with what’s in store. One such effort comes in the form of a new Toyota Prius Prime, the new plug-in version which is being built on the design and style of the 2016 Toyota Prius. The automaker obviously isn’t new to hybrid technology or plug-in technology. After all, you can get plenty of Toyota models in hybrid form, like the 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid.

However, plug-in technology hasn’t been at the forefront of Toyota efforts. But that looks like it’s about to change with the unveiling of the new Toyota Prius Prime. This plug-in model uses a solar panel which is a part of the roof used to draw and conserve energy, offering you the ability to drive longer  than before. The solar panels also supply power to the car’s accessories like the power windows, interior lights, and the air conditioning.

A U.S. release hasn’t been set as of yet due to regulations on making the solar panel comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regulations. Nevertheless, the third generation Toyota Prius did have an optional solar roof which powered a ventilation fan while the car was parked. So we think it’s only a matter of time before the Toyota Prius Prime becomes available.
