Toyota Tests “Keyless” Toyota Prius

One of the reasons we’re proud to feature the Toyota Prius in our inventory is because the model integrates high-end technology into smart driving. Thanks to a recent news article, we’ve learned that Toyota is taking the next step in making their cars more user-friendly.

According to a recent article in USA Today, Toyota will be testing a new system in San Francisco for “keyless cars”. Investing $10 in the Getaround car sharing service (which allows users to “rent” other people’s cars), Toyota is testing the new “Smart Key Box” system, which would allow users to open cars via a smartphone app.

For this initial phase of testing, the Smart Key Box system (which integrates Bluetooth functionality) will be functional on all Toyota Prius and Lexus models. However, if this initial test is successful, Toyota may integrate the Smart Key Box system in Japan for other car rental businesses.

Integrating “keyless” technology into the Toyota Prius makes perfect sense, especially for a hybrid vehicle. Overall engine performance can be monitored via a 4.2-inch screen next to the digital speedometer or the main 6.1-inch central display. Driven by a gas-electric drivetrain, the Toyota Prius manages a high level of efficiency. Even various other features – from LED headlights to its sound system – integrate technology in a very driver-friendly manner.

News that Toyota is testing “keyless” cars is good news… but not unexpected.  Toyota has always driven efforts to make their cars more tech-friendly, and they have just taken the next step with the Toyota Prius.
